GATE Summer Internship Program 2026

The GATE Internship Program is designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as young professionals, who wish to enhance their academic knowledge through hands-on experience in the fields of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence.

Who Are We Looking For?

We are primarily looking for 3rd and 4th year undergraduate students, Master’s students, or recent graduates in STEM disciplines with the following profiles:

Profile 1: Reliable Computational Modelling

Requirements:

• Basic experience with thermofluid simulations (Computational Fluid Dynamics – CFD)
• Enrollment in an engineering Bachelor’s or Master’s program, or another program offering training in thermofluid simulations

The intern will contribute to the development of a thermofluid simulation framework for non-urban environments and support projects in urban settings. The role also includes tasks involving industrial partners.

Profile 2: Machine Learning and AI

Requirements:

• Strong practical skills in Python
• Knowledge of PyTorch or another ML framework
• Understanding of neural networks and ML architectures
• Enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or related fields
• Alternatively, senior students from mathematics or science high schools are also encouraged to apply

The intern will work on tasks related to energy efficiency, large language models, and graph neural networks.

Profile 3: “Future Cities” Applied Research Domain

Requirements:

• Strong practical skills in computer vision, 3D web technologies, game engines, geospatial technologies, remote sensing, climate and energy modelling, ML/AI, and Python
• Educational background in Data Science, Software Development, Climate-oriented studies, Computer Science, or Software Engineering

Interns will work on internal and European research projects.

Profile 4: Big Data Engineering

Requirements:

• Skills in Docker, GitLab, NoSQL, Hadoop, Python, and JavaScript
• Knowledge of semantic modeling, Markov Decision Processes, Bayes networks, and Linux OS
• Master’s-level education in Mathematics, Software Engineering, or Computer Science

Profile 5: “Information Environment Analysis” Applied Research Domain

Requirements vary depending on the project assignment:

PlugInfo Project:

• Excellent command of Bulgarian and English
• Skills in working with spreadsheets, JSON/CSV files, and basic Python scripting
• Ability to follow complex annotation guidelines

NLP/Security:

• Basic knowledge of Natural Language Processing (NLP)
• Familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow

PODIA Project:

• Good command of Python
• Experience with text-processing libraries (pandas, numpy) and NLP libraries (scikit-learn, spaCy, Hugging Face, etc.)
• Basic knowledge of Git

Ideal Educational Background:

• General/PlugInfo: 3rd–4th year undergraduate or Master’s students with interests in NLP, computational linguistics, logic, or digital media analysis
• PODIA: Students in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Computational Linguistics
• Students in Political Science or International Relations with strong analytical skills are also encouraged to apply

Internship Tasks:

• PlugInfo: Expanding Bulgarian datasets, improving logical fallacy taxonomies, quality assurance, and error analysis
• LLM Security: Creating datasets for distinguishing human- and machine-generated text and training/fine-tuning transformer-based classifiers
• PODIA: Preparing corpora for elections or political debates, testing pipeline prompts, and creating analyses, notebooks, and visualizations
