The Master’s Programme in Big Data Technologies is jointly offered by the GATE Institute and the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. Designed to meet the growing demand for specialists in artificial intelligence, data engineering, and data science, the programme combines academic excellence with hands-on experience in solving real-world challenges.
The curriculum equips students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to design, develop, and deploy modern data-driven solutions. Throughout the programme, students explore the latest advances in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Engineering, Data Analytics, and Big Data Technologies, working with diverse real-world datasets, including IoT sensor data, images, documents, transactions, and text.
The programme covers the entire big data lifecycle through five core disciplines:
Students also choose from a range of elective courses that allow them to deepen their expertise in specific areas of interest.
Practical training is at the heart of the programme. Most courses include laboratory sessions using Python and Java, while students gain experience working with cutting-edge technologies and GATE’s advanced research infrastructure.
The programme provides access to modern cloud-based environments and distributed data processing platforms, preparing graduates to work with technologies widely adopted in academia and industry.
Courses are delivered by experienced faculty members from Sofia University together with researchers from the GATE Institute and guest lecturers from leading European universities.
Students have the opportunity to participate in research and innovation projects, collaborate with international partners, and gain first-hand experience in solving real societal and industrial challenges.
Students may have the opportunity to apply for scholarships offered by the GATE Institute and its strategic partners, subject to the conditions of the respective programmes.
