Simeon Karpuzov, a researcher at the GATE Institute, received the grand prize at the 23rd edition of the entrepreneurship competition held during the European Day of the Entrepreneur 2025.
His innovative project – an “Epileptic Seizure Detection System” – impressed the jury with its scientific contribution, practical applicability, and strong potential to support healthcare. The award was presented on 20 November 2025 during an official ceremony hosted at the GATE Institute.
The forum, held under the theme “Entrepreneurship in the Age of AI,” was organised by the Technology Transfer Center at the Research Sector of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski,” in partnership with the University Center for Entrepreneurship and Project Management at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration. The event, dedicated to supporting student and youth entrepreneurship, was held with the support of DSK Bank.
The opening ceremony featured inspiring addresses by leading representatives of the academic and European communities. Bozhil Dobrev, Director of the Research Sector, highlighted the importance of young entrepreneurs, while Yordanka Chobanova, Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Bulgaria, emphasised creativity, development, and courage as the driving forces of innovation in the era of artificial intelligence.
On behalf of the academic leadership of Sofia University, the participants were welcomed by Acad. Toni Spassov, Vice-Rector for Research and Project Activities. He noted the symbolic significance of hosting such a well-established forum at the GATE Institute – a new and rapidly growing scientific centre within Alma Mater.
