The globally acclaimed researcher will demonstrate how AI and data analytics can transform urban environments. He will explore the creation of intelligent and sustainable cities where technology supports the harmonious interaction between people, infrastructure, and the environment — forming a new kind of ecological intelligence.

Prof. Koshizuka will also highlight the collaboration between the EU and Japan in developing open platforms for smart cities — a vision for an intelligent society where data drives innovation and real changes in people’s lives. His participation in “Up To GATE 2025” will emphasize how the exchange and sharing of data between countries, institutions, and industries can foster sustainable development, innovation, and the digital transformation of society.

Prof. Noboru Koshizuka is a professor at the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies (III) at the University of Tokyo. His research has strong applied dimensions — from AI-powered smart cities and digital governance to smart agriculture, educational technologies (EdTech), tourism solutions, and human-computer interaction (HCI).

His work demonstrates how the intelligent use of data and technology can reshape society — creating more connected, sustainable, and smart cities where people and technology work together in harmony.

The laboratory led by Prof. Koshizuka within the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies (III) and the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies (GSII) at the University of Tokyo is a leading research center in the field of federated AI systems, integration of data spaces with AI solutions, and secure data exchange across diverse ecosystems of stakeholders and sectors. Its main mission is to develop secure and intelligent infrastructures for data sharing and exchange, supporting the digital transformation of society and fostering real industrial and social innovation.

Prof. Koshizuka is the Chair of the Data Society Alliance and a member of the Digital Society Initiative Council under Japan’s Digital Agency, actively contributing to the formation of national strategies and policies for digital transformation. He is also a member of prestigious international organizations such as IEEE, ACM, and the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ).

On November 26, 2025, one day before the major international event “Up To GATE 2025: New Horizons”, the GATE Institute and the University of Tokyo will sign a Memorandum of Cooperation. The agreement will open new opportunities for joint projects in the areas of artificial intelligence, big data, smart cities, and data spaces. It will accelerate scientific exchange and support the development of innovative solutions with real impact on society. The memorandum marks another step toward the goals set out in the Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership between Bulgaria and Japan, signed in May 2025 in Tokyo, and is a natural continuation of GATE Institute’s mission to build global links in science and innovation.

Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of the conversation about the future of artificial intelligence!
