As part of the GATE Academic Days at the Bulgarian Pavilion of Osaka Expo 2025, the GATE Institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kwansei Gakuin University – one of Japan’s most renowned private universities, founded in 1889 and recognized for its long-standing tradition in architecture, urban planning, and innovation.
The partnership aims to advance joint research and projects in urban planning, intelligent infrastructure, and sustainable cities, focusing on the practical application of scientific knowledge in support of sustainable urban development.
The ceremony was attended by H.E. Ms. Marieta Arabadjieva, Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to Japan, Prof. Matsuura from Kwansei Gakuin University, and Prof. Dr. Sylvia Ilieva, Director of the GATE Institute.
Prof. Ilieva highlighted that the partnership is “an example of how science and technology can become tools for social progress and for creating better living environments through knowledge and experience exchange.”
Even before the signing of the memorandum, GATE and Kwansei Gakuin University had already taken the first steps in their cooperation, including discussions on a joint project initiative focused on the urban planning and infrastructure of Sofia – a project that symbolizes their shared commitment to practical science and innovation.
The new agreement lays the foundation for a long-term academic partnership through joint research projects, expert and student exchanges, academic events, and knowledge sharing in the field of smart and sustainable cities.
“Signing this agreement on the world stage of Osaka Expo 2025 symbolizes the trust and cooperation between Bulgaria and Japan as they work together to turn their visions for the future into reality,” said Prof. Ilieva.
The partnership with Kwansei Gakuin University marks a new stage in expanding GATE’s international network and reaffirms the institute’s mission to transform scientific potential into globally impactful solutions.
