GATE Centre of Excellence “Big Data for Smart Society” is a research institute, established in 2019 in Sofia, Bulgaria as a joint initiative between Sofia University Bulgaria, Chalmers University of Technology (Chalmers) and Chalmers Industrial Technology (CIT), Sweden.

GATE’s mission is to:

With respect to its intensive development, GATE CoE is looking for Researchers in Computer Vision and Deep Learning (R1, R2, R3).

Responsibilities

Common

• Design and develop advanced deep learning architectures and computer vision algorithms for solving challenging real-world problems like 3D urban scene understanding based on LIDAR, satellite imagery, street-view data, and UAV (drone) images.
• Continuously maintain and improve existing deep learning models by optimizing performance, troubleshooting issues, and refining structural elements while reducing computational resource consumption.
• Stay updated on deep learning advancements and contribute to best practices in model development.
• Research SOTA methods for developing models to accomplish 3D generative AI tasks as well as conventional computer vision tasks.
• Help curate ground truth datasets for model evaluation.
• Design and implement core components of ML data pipelines.
• Disseminating results through scientific publications.
• Engage in appropriate training and development opportunities.

One or more of the following responsibilities

• Coming up with large-scale data collection techniques for training Deep Neural Networks.
• Supervising graduate and internship students.
• Communicate ideas and results with GATE stakeholders.
• Keep up-to-date with funding opportunities and contribute to project proposals.

 

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential

• Junior researcher: А minimum of bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Geoinformatics/Geomatics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or in a related discipline;
• Experienced researcher: A PhD Degree in Computer Science, Geoinformatics/Geomatics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or in a related discipline or a Master’s Degree plus a minimum of 4 years of industry-based relevant research experience;
• Established researcher: A PhD Degree in Computer Science, Geoinformatics/Geomatics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or in a related discipline or a Master’s Degree plus a minimum of 7 years of industry-based relevant research experience;
• Hands-on experience with deep learning models, including tasks such as detection, segmentation, and recurrent models in real-world applications.
• Experience applying computer vision techniques to camera and LiDAR data.
• Strong understanding of neural network architectures (CNNs, RNNs, Transformers).
• Strong programming skills in Python and experience with Machine Learning frameworks and libraries such as Tensorflow, PyTorch, and Numpy;
• Experience with developing Machine Learning models, including regression, clustering, and classification techniques, for vision tasks;
• Experience with cloud platforms for model development and deployment;
• Solid oral/written communication and presentation skills to explain the outcome of the research to coworkers and peers;
• Ability to prioritize tasks and work on multiple assignments, and a deep desire to find ways to create value and deliver results.
• Fluent English is a must.

Experience with one or more of the following

• Experience with 3D Deep Learning is preferred
• Experience with geospatial coordinates systems and transformation is desirable, but not required.
• Geospatial analytical skills including in QGIS and related software as they apply to urban system dynamics and urban governance applications;
• Demonstrated academic and other outputs in the form of scientific publications, grants, fellowships and/or public repositories such as GitHub.
